View Resource

Understanding the impact of social media on adolescents’ well-being has become a priority due to a simultaneous increase in mental health problems (Kim, Citation2017). The link between social media and mental health problems is not straightforward, with various contributory factors. Social media could be regarded as a ‘double-edged sword’. Studies show the benefits of enabling people to express their thoughts and feelings, and to receive social support (Deters & Mehl, Citation2013; Lenhart et al., Citation2015; Lilley, Ball, & Vernon, Citation2014; O’Keeffe & Clarke-Pearson, Citation2011; Rosen, Citation2011). Research has also indicated a link between social media use and psychological problems.
