Peer Supports & Student Groups

The Jed Foundation

Established to prevent suicide on college campuses and focus on the underlying causes of suicide. Convenes higher education and government leaders as well as scientific research and mental health experts in order to design effective prevention programs that reflect the best in current thinking.

Campus-Based Stigma Reduction Activities

California’s Mental Health Movement, Each Mind Matters, has made stigma reduction a top priority. This fact sheet from the CCC Chancellor’s Office provides an overview of primary stigma reduction strategies and offers recommendations for the California Community Colleges (CCC) for implementation. It includes tools and campaigns that colleges can use to engage in knowledge building, contact trainings, and advocacy.

Available in English and Spanish.

Transformation Center Example of peer support for mental health from NAMI-Massachusetts Transformation Center

A Massachusetts statewide peer-operated training, technical assistance, and peer support networking organization. We seek to transform policy and practice in communities and systems by facilitating the growth, well-being and diverse voices and expressions of people in all stages of recovering their mental health and freedom from addictions and traumatic experiences.

Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA)

DBSA offers both in-person and online support groups. As independent affiliates of DBSA in their communities, DBSA chapters offer nearly 650 peer-run support groups. They have groups for individuals with depression and bipolar disorder, parents of people with mood disorders, and peer workers.

Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE)

A national non-profit agency whose mission is to prevent suicide through public awareness and education, reduce stigma, and serve as a resource for those touched by suicide. SAVE utilizes a national multi-media campaign including television and radio ads, indoor and outdoor media, as well as print ads to raise awareness and educate the general public on the link between brain illnesses such as depression and bipolar disorder and suicide.
